The coverage that just went live
O2 has turned on its 5G+ network across Newcastle, wider Tyneside and Sunderland. The upgrade reaches at least 90 % of outdoor areas in each city and town, giving up to 890,000 people in Newcastle and Tyneside plus more than 288,000 in Sunderland access to faster speeds, lower latency and better reliability. The work forms part of Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan for 2026, which adds masts, small cells and extra spectrum.
What you actually need
You pay nothing extra. You simply need a compatible phone, an up-to-date O2 SIM or eSIM and to be inside a 5G+ patch. The network uses a dedicated 5G core rather than leaning on 4G kit, which is why latency drops and capacity rises in busy spots such as the Quayside, Gateshead or Sunderland city centre.
How it fits the bigger picture
This is the latest stage of O2’s standalone 5G push. We already saw the same move rolled out across Northern Ireland earlier this month. Professor Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, said: “These upgrades mark another major milestone in the rollout of our network. By extending 5G+ coverage across Newcastle, Tyneside and Sunderland, we’re enabling more people to benefit from faster speeds, lower latency and a more reliable mobile experience.”
Who should check now
Anyone on O2 who commutes through the covered zones or streams heavily in town centres stands to notice the difference first.
