What is an early termination fee?
An early termination fee (ETF) โ sometimes called a cancellation fee or early exit charge โ is what a provider bills when you leave a fixed-term contract before the minimum term ends. It is most common on broadband, TV and bundled packages, but it can also apply to mobile phone contracts if you are still inside your minimum term.
The fee is not a single flat penalty across the industry. Each provider sets its own rules, and the final figure can include remaining monthly charges, equipment return costs, and admin fees on top. That is why a ballpark estimate is useful before you commit to switching โ especially if you are weighing up whether to move to a cheaper SIM only deal or a new phone contract on another network.
How our early termination fee calculator works
The calculator above gives a ballpark estimate only. Your provider will confirm the binding figure, and it may differ from what you see here.
To use it, enter:
- Contract start date โ when your minimum term began
- Contract length or end date โ how long the deal runs for, or the date it ends
- Monthly price โ your current package cost in pounds
- Notice period โ how many daysโ notice you must give (30 days is typical; Sky often requires 31)
- Equipment fees (optional) โ any handset, router or kit charges you expect
The calculator then works out how many whole months you would still be billed for after your notice period, multiplies that by your monthly price, and adds any equipment fees you entered.
Important assumptions: the estimate uses calendar months, not daily pro-rata. It assumes notice starts today, and it does not account for mid-contract price rises, promotional step pricing, or provider-specific waivers. Always treat the result as guidance, not a quote.
How to avoid a Sky cancellation fee
Sky is one of the providers where early exit costs come up most often. Searches for how to avoid a Sky cancellation fee usually boil down to timing and notice.
The surest way to avoid paying is to wait until your minimum term ends and then serve the correct notice period. Sky typically requires 31 daysโ notice. If you cancel before the minimum term finishes, you will usually owe charges for the remaining months on your package โ whether that is TV, broadband, or both.
If you need to leave early, there is rarely a guaranteed way to skip the fee entirely. You can:
- Check your contract end date in My Sky or on your bill
- Ask Sky for a written quote of your early termination charges before you confirm
- Use the calculator above as a Sky early termination charges calculator to get a rough figure first
- Put your cancellation in writing using our cancellation letter generator
For step-by-step help with leaving Sky, see our guide on how to cancel Sky.
Early termination fees by provider
Exit costs vary widely. Below are the providers where early termination fees are most commonly searched โ and where our calculator is most useful.
Sky
Sky packages often combine TV, broadband and add-ons such as Sky Sports or Sky Cinema. Leaving early typically means paying for remaining months on each element of your contract, plus any equipment return charges for boxes or dishes.
Use the calculator with your Sky monthly bill figure, then confirm with Sky before you switch. If you are also moving your mobile service, you can compare SIM only deals separately โ Sky Mobile uses a different cancellation process via PAC codes.
Virgin Media
Virgin Media is not on Openreach One Touch Switch, so cancelling broadband means dealing with Virgin directly โ your new provider will not cancel Virgin for you automatically.
A Virgin cancellation fee depends on how many months are left on your contract and whether you need to return a hub or TV box. Equipment charges can sit on top of the monthly exit cost. See our how to cancel Virgin Media guide for the full process, then compare broadband deals from other networks.
Plusnet
Plusnet broadband contracts typically carry an early exit charge if you leave before the minimum term ends. The Plusnet early termination fee is usually based on the months remaining after your notice period, though Plusnet may calculate this differently from a simple monthly multiplier.
Check your Plusnet account for your contract end date and notice period (often 30 days). Our how to cancel Plusnet page walks through the steps.
TalkTalk
TalkTalk applies early exit fees on fixed-term broadband contracts. The charge generally reflects remaining months on your deal. If you are switching both broadband and mobile, work out each exit cost separately โ broadband fees here, and a PAC-based switch for your phone.
See how to cancel TalkTalk for provider-specific detail.
BT Broadband
BT Broadband is usually cancelled by notice rather than a large upfront exit fee, but a BT broadband early termination fee can still apply in some circumstances โ for example, if you leave a fixed-term deal early or have equipment outstanding.
BT is on Openreach One Touch Switch, which can simplify the handover when you move to another Openreach-based provider. Residual charges, if any, are best confirmed directly with BT. See how to cancel BT Broadband.
Mobile contracts and early exit charges
If you are on a mobile phone contract and want to switch networks, the exit cost works differently from broadband โ but the same principle applies: leaving before your minimum term ends can trigger a charge.
On mobile, the early termination fee is usually calculated from the months remaining on your contract and may include the cost of any handset subsidy you received. EE, O2, Three and Vodafone all have their own formulas, and MVNOs such as Tesco Mobile, iD Mobile and Sky Mobile follow their host networkโs rules.
Before you port your number to a new deal, check what you owe:
- EE โ check the EE app or call 150; see how to cancel EE
- O2 โ review your contract in My O2; see how to cancel O2
- Three โ check your account online; see how to cancel Three
- Vodafone โ check My Vodafone or call customer services; see how to cancel Vodafone
Once you know the exit cost, compare it against what you would save on a new deal. A cheaper 30-day SIM only plan or one of the cheapest SIM only deals available today may pay back an early exit fee within a few months โ but only if the saving is real once you factor in the charge.
Switching mobile without overpaying
For most mobile switches, you do not need to cancel your old contract manually. Instead, you port your number using a PAC code:
- Text PAC to 65075 from the phone you want to keep
- Your current network replies with a PAC code (valid for 30 days)
- Give that code to your new provider when you order a SIM only deal or phone contract
- Your old contract ends automatically when the port completes
If you do not need your number, text STAC to 75075 instead. Our PAC & STAC code generator shows the exact text to send for each UK network.
The key financial question is whether your remaining contract months cost more than the new deal saves you. Use the calculator above with your mobile monthly cost and contract dates to get a ballpark, then confirm with your network.
Where to find a better mobile deal
Once you have a clear picture of exit costs, compare what is available:
- Compare SIM only deals โ flexible plans without a new handset
- EE phone deals, O2 phone deals, Three phone deals and Vodafone phone deals โ if you want a new phone on contract
- Phone contracts under ยฃ30 โ budget-friendly options
Moving from a pricey legacy contract to a competitive SIM only plan is one of the fastest ways to cut your monthly bill โ provided the early exit charge does not wipe out the saving.
Notice periods: why they matter for your estimate
Your notice period directly affects how much an early termination fee calculator shows. The tool assumes you give notice today, then counts any whole months you would still be billed for after that notice window ends.
| Provider type | Typical notice period |
|---|---|
| Most mobile networks | 30 days |
| Sky | 31 days |
| Virgin Media | 30 days |
| Plusnet, TalkTalk, NOW Broadband | 30 days |
| BT Broadband | 30 days |
If your notice period covers the rest of your contract, the estimated fee may be zero โ you would simply run out the term. If months remain after notice, those are what the calculator multiplies by your monthly price.
Equipment and return fees
Broadband and TV exit costs are not always just remaining months. You may also face:
- Router or hub non-return charges โ if you do not send equipment back within the providerโs deadline
- TV box or Mini box fees โ common with Sky and Virgin Media
- Handset balances โ on mobile contracts where the phone cost is spread across the term
Add any expected equipment charges in the calculatorโs optional field so your ballpark figure is closer to reality. Providers publish return instructions when you cancel โ follow them carefully to avoid extra bills.
When leaving early still makes sense
Paying an early termination fee is not always the wrong move. It can be worth it when:
- Your new deal saves enough each month to recover the exit cost within a few months
- Your current provider has raised prices mid-contract and alternatives are significantly cheaper
- You are moving home and your current broadband or TV package no longer fits
- You want to consolidate onto a single, cheaper SIM only plan and drop an expensive phone contract
Work it out simply: divide your estimated exit fee by your expected monthly saving. That gives you the number of months until you break even. If you plan to stay on the new deal longer than that, switching early may be the better financial choice.
Putting your cancellation in writing
Whether you are leaving broadband, TV or mobile, a written cancellation record protects you. It confirms your notice start date, expected end date, and any fees you were quoted.
Our cancellation letter generator drafts a formal letter or email using your details, provider name, and notice period. You can copy the text, download it, and send it to your providerโs cancellations address.
Keep a copy of everything โ the letter, any reply, and the final bill showing the exit charge.
What to do after you have an estimate
- Run the calculator with your contract dates and monthly cost
- Contact your provider and ask for a binding early termination quote
- Compare alternatives โ broadband deals for home internet, or SIM only and phone deals for mobile
- Generate a cancellation letter if you need written notice
- Switch once you are confident the saving outweighs the exit cost
