How to cancel TalkTalk broadband

If you want to cancel TalkTalk, the process depends on whether you are still in a minimum contract term, switching to another provider, or moving home. TalkTalk broadband runs on the Openreach network, which means many switches can be handled through One Touch Switch — but you should still confirm your end date, notice period, and any charges in writing before you order a new deal.

The quickest way to start is to call TalkTalk customer services on 0345 172 0088, or send a formal cancellation request by post or email. Live chat alone is not enough: put your request in writing and keep a copy until TalkTalk confirms your final bill date.

Ways to cancel a contract with TalkTalk

There are three common routes, depending on your situation.

Switching to another Openreach-based provider. If your new broadband supplier uses the Openreach network — such as BT, Sky, Plusnet, EE, or Vodafone — they may notify TalkTalk on your behalf through One Touch Switch. That can count as your notice, but you should still check with TalkTalk that the switch date is correct and ask whether any early termination charges apply.

Switching to a non-Openreach network. If you are moving to a provider on its own network — for example Virgin Media — you must cancel TalkTalk yourself. Do not assume your new order will close your old account automatically.

Leaving without switching. If you are moving abroad, going without home broadband, or cancelling for another reason, contact TalkTalk directly to serve your notice. Use our cancellation letter generator to draft a clear written request with your account details and preferred end date.

How to terminate a TalkTalk contract step by step

  1. Check your contract end date. Log into My Account on talktalk.co.uk or review your welcome pack. Note whether you are still inside the minimum term.
  2. Estimate any early exit cost. If you are mid-contract, use the early termination fee calculator on this page for a ballpark figure based on your monthly price and remaining term. TalkTalk’s actual charge depends on your package — ask them for the binding amount before you commit elsewhere.
  3. Put your cancellation in writing. Call 0345 172 0088 or send a letter or email. Include your name, address, account number, and the date you want the service to end. Our cancellation letter generator can produce a ready-to-send template.
  4. Serve 30 days’ notice. TalkTalk’s standard notice period is 30 days. Your service continues until the end of that period unless TalkTalk confirms an earlier date.
  5. Return your router and any kit. TalkTalk typically sends a prepaid returns label. Failure to return equipment can result in additional charges on top of any exit fee.
  6. Confirm your final bill. Ask TalkTalk to confirm your disconnection date, any early termination charge, and the date your direct debit will stop. Keep written confirmation.

TalkTalk notice period

TalkTalk requires 30 days’ notice when you cancel outside any cooling-off window. If you are switching to another Openreach provider through One Touch Switch, TalkTalk may accept notice from your new supplier — but you should verify this rather than rely on it silently.

If your contract minimum term has already ended, you still need to give notice; you simply avoid early termination charges tied to remaining months.

TalkTalk early termination fees

If you cancel TalkTalk before your minimum contract term ends, an early termination charge usually applies. The fee is calculated per month remaining on your contract and varies by package — TalkTalk publishes current rates at talktalk.co.uk/cancel.

Typical charges (subject to change) include:

PackageApproximate charge per remaining month
Fast Broadband£10.80
Fibre 35 / 65 / 150£10.20
Ultra Fibre£19.20

These figures are indicative. Your binding total depends on how many months are left, your exact package, and any equipment or admin charges. Use the calculator on this page, then call TalkTalk on 0345 172 0088 for the figure that will appear on your final bill.

When you may be able to cancel TalkTalk without a fee

You may avoid early termination charges in certain circumstances:

  • Cooling-off period. You can cancel within 14 days of signing up (or within 14 days of receiving equipment, if ordered separately), provided you return any kit within the required timeframe.
  • Contract end date reached. Once your minimum term has finished, you can leave on notice without an exit fee for remaining months.
  • Price rises above inflation. Under Ofcom rules, if TalkTalk raises your price above the rate of inflation during your contract, you may have the right to leave penalty-free.
  • Persistent speed problems. TalkTalk is signed up to Ofcom’s broadband speeds code of practice. If your line consistently fails to deliver the minimum guaranteed speed and TalkTalk cannot fix the issue, you may be entitled to cancel without charge — you will need evidence from speed tests and your contact history.

Always ask TalkTalk to confirm in writing whether a fee applies before you switch.

Switching from TalkTalk with One Touch Switch

Because TalkTalk uses the Openreach network, switching to another Openreach-based ISP is usually straightforward. Your new provider can often manage the handover so you do not need to overlap two connections or arrange an engineer visit in most cases.

One Touch Switch does not remove the need to check exit fees if you are still in contract. It also does not apply when you move to a separate network such as Virgin Media — see our guide on how to cancel Virgin Media if that is your destination.

Returning TalkTalk equipment

When you cancel TalkTalk broadband, you are normally required to return your router and any other supplied equipment. TalkTalk should provide a prepaid returns pack. If equipment is not returned within the stated timeframe, you may be charged the full equipment price.

Check your final bill carefully for router return fees as well as any early termination charge.

What to do after you cancel TalkTalk

Once your disconnection date is confirmed, compare what is available at your address before you sign up elsewhere. Our broadband deals page lists current offers from multiple providers.

Depending on what matters most to you:

TalkTalk Mail and other services

Cancelling TalkTalk broadband does not automatically cancel TalkTalk Mail. If you want to keep your @talktalk.net address, TalkTalk offers a paid Mail Plus service — otherwise the account may be closed after a grace period. Check TalkTalk’s current mail policy when you cancel.

If you also have TalkTalk mobile or other products, each service may need to be cancelled separately. This page covers TalkTalk home broadband only.
