An eSIM is an embedded SIM built directly into your device, so there's no plastic card to slot in or swap out. Instead of handling a physical chip, you simply download a plan and your phone is ready to connect to a network.

This makes it especially handy for travel, as you can hold several plans on one device and switch between them as you move from country to country, all without ever opening the SIM tray.

1. Check your phone is compatible

   Most recent smartphones support eSIM. You can usually confirm this in your device settings under the mobile or cellular section.

2. Buy your plan and get a QR code

   After purchasing an eSIM plan, the provider sends you a QR code, either by email or within their app.

3. Scan the code to install

   Open your phone's mobile data settings, choose to add an eSIM and scan the QR code. Your device downloads the plan and you can switch it on whenever you're ready to use it.
