How to cancel Plusnet broadband
If you want to cancel Plusnet, the route depends on whether you are switching to another provider or leaving broadband altogether. Plusnet runs on the Openreach network, so in most cases your new provider can handle the switch through One Touch Switch — you may not need to contact Plusnet directly. If you are moving out, closing your account, or switching to a provider on a different network (such as Virgin Media), you will need to give notice yourself.
You can cancel by calling 0330 1239 123, or by sending a written cancellation request. Have your account number, name, and address to hand. If you have a landline with Plusnet, your landline number can serve as an additional service identifier.
Plusnet notice period
The Plusnet notice period for residential broadband is 14 days. Business accounts require 28 days.
Notice starts when Plusnet receives your cancellation request — by phone, in writing, or via your new provider’s order notification if you are switching. You remain liable for charges during the notice period, including any monthly fees that fall within those 14 days.
If you withdraw a cancellation during the notice period and later decide to leave again, a fresh request is required and a new notice period begins. Cancellations are scheduled for the end of the notice period; if that date falls on a weekend, Plusnet typically processes the closure on the next working day.
Once your minimum contract term has ended, Plusnet moves you to a rolling monthly contract automatically. At that point you can cancel with 14 days’ notice and, in most cases, no early termination charge applies.
Plusnet early termination fee
A Plusnet early termination fee — officially an Early Termination Charge — applies if you cancel before your minimum term ends. Standard and fibre contracts usually run for 12 or 18 months; fibre packages always require a minimum term.
Plusnet calculates the charge roughly as follows:
- Take your monthly charge (including any discounts)
- Deduct VAT
- Reduce the figure to account for costs Plusnet saves because you are leaving early (such as wholesale costs)
- Deduct 1% for early payment
- Multiply by the number of remaining months in your minimum term (part-months are charged daily on a pro-rata basis)
- Add VAT to the final amount
- Offset any account credit against the total
The exact figure depends on your package, discounts, and how many months remain. Log into My Account to check your contract end date and any charges shown on your Account Summary, or call 0330 1239 123 for a binding quote before you commit to leaving.
Our early termination fee calculator gives a ballpark estimate based on your contract dates and monthly price. Treat it as a guide only — Plusnet’s own calculation may differ, especially where promotional pricing or mid-contract changes apply.
Switching to another Openreach provider
If your new broadband provider uses the Openreach network — including Sky, TalkTalk, BT, EE, and Vodafone — you usually do not need to tell Plusnet yourself. Place your order with the new provider and they will notify Plusnet when to switch off your service.
Plusnet accepts the new provider’s order notification as your cancellation notice. Your line stays active until the switch completes, which helps avoid gaps in service. Still confirm your switch date and any exit fees with Plusnet if you are within your minimum term — an early termination charge can apply even when switching through One Touch Switch.
Compare what is available at your address on our broadband deals page before you order. Prices and speeds vary by postcode, so it is worth checking whether a faster or cheaper package is available from another Openreach provider.
Cancelling without switching (moving home or closing your account)
If you are not moving to another broadband provider — for example, you are emigrating, moving to an address where you will not take broadband, or switching to a non-Openreach network such as Virgin Media — contact Plusnet directly to cancel.
Send a formal cancellation letter or email so you have a written record. Our cancellation letter generator can draft one for you, pre-filled with Plusnet as the provider and a 14-day notice period. Keep a copy and follow up until you receive written confirmation of your end date and any final charges.
Do not port your landline number away separately if your broadband is tied to the same line — moving the number can inadvertently cancel both services and trigger unexpected charges.
Returning your Plusnet router and final bill
If you signed up after 1 February 2024 and do not return your Plusnet router, a £50 non-return fee applies. Plusnet provides free return instructions when you cancel — follow them promptly and keep proof of postage.
Your final bill may include:
- Charges for the notice period
- Any early termination charge if you are still in contract
- Router non-return fee, if applicable
- Outstanding usage or add-on charges
Plusnet closes your account once your new service is set up (when switching) or at the end of your notice period (when cancelling outright). Check that direct debits stop after closure and that any credit on your account is refunded.
How to avoid paying more than you need to
Several steps can reduce the cost of leaving Plusnet:
Wait until your minimum term ends. Once you are on a rolling monthly contract, you can cancel with 14 days’ notice and no early termination charge.
Get a binding quote before switching. If you must leave early, call Plusnet for the exact charge rather than relying on estimates alone.
Compare deals before you commit. A lower monthly price elsewhere may offset an exit fee over the remaining months of a new contract. Browse cheapest broadband deals or 12-month broadband deals to see what rivals are offering.
Return equipment on time. The £50 router fee is easily avoided with a prompt, tracked return.
Put everything in writing. A cancellation letter creates a clear paper trail if dates or charges are disputed later.
What to do after you cancel Plusnet
Once your Plusnet service ends, compare broadband from other providers at your postcode. Openreach-based alternatives include Sky, TalkTalk, BT, EE, and Vodafone — each with different pricing, speeds, and contract lengths. If you want maximum flexibility, no-contract broadband deals may suit you better than another long minimum term.
