The five 5-minute jobs

E.ON Next and Dion Dublin have listed five simple tasks that together could save the average household up to £292 a year. The fixes cost little or nothing and take minutes:

  • Insulate hot water pipes and tanks: £154
  • Give your fridge and freezer a quick MOT: £70
  • Fit radiator reflector panels: £24
  • Use plug timers: £8
  • Swap old bulbs for LEDs: £36

Savings are estimates only and will vary by home, appliances and tariff. Some jobs apply only to certain properties.

Why these tips matter now

New research for E.ON Next found a quarter of people are put off energy-proofing because they think it is too expensive, while one in five simply do not know where to start. Two-thirds had no idea reflector panels could save £24 a year. Dion Dublin said: "With energy costs top of mind for many households ahead of the colder months, many people assume making a home more energy efficient means expensive renovations, but often the biggest savings come from small, low-cost changes. The challenge isn't always cost, it's knowing where to start."

Extra help if bills are tight

E.ON Next is also reminding customers that support is available through its Energy Fund, the Priority Services Register and a partnership with Lightning Reach that has already unlocked £2.6 million in grants. Customers can get personalised tips via the E.ON Next app. Following E.ON Next's recent expansion after its OVO buy, the supplier is using the same channels to push these practical steps. We list current tariffs and fixed deals on our energy comparison page so you can see what else is out there.
