Two new battery sites
EDF has signed long-term optimisation agreements for two grid-scale battery projects developed by Trinasolar ISBU. The Ruby site near Aberdeen will deliver 40 MW / 80 MWh from October 2026, while the Chatterley site in Gloucestershire will provide 49.9 MW / 99.8 MWh from March 2027. Together they add 179.8 MWh of two-hour storage capacity.
EDF will run both assets through its Powershift platform, trading the stored energy and offering flexibility services to the national grid.
What the projects will do
The batteries will charge when demand is low and discharge when it peaks, easing pressure on the system and helping absorb more wind and solar output. Stuart Fenner, Commercial Director of Business & Wholesale Services at EDF, said: “As renewable generation and electrification continue to grow, flexible assets such as battery storage are becoming increasingly important to maintaining system stability. We’re pleased to be working with Trinasolar ISBU to optimise both projects and help unlock the flexibility needed to support Britain’s transition to a low carbon, electrified energy system.”
