What’s now live in the city
O2 has activated its next-generation 5G+ service across Bristol, covering the city centre, Harbourside, surrounding neighbourhoods and Avonmouth. Up to 495,000 residents can now tap into the standalone network, which the operator says delivers faster speeds, better reliability and lower latency than previous 5G kit.
The service forms part of Virgin Media O2’s £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan and requires no price rise for existing customers who already have a suitable handset and plan.
How to get it working
Customers need a 5G+ compatible device and an up-to-date SIM. Some may have to move to a digital eSIM. Full instructions sit on O2’s site, and the upgrade is free once the phone and SIM are ready.
We’ve seen the same standalone rollout land in other cities earlier this year, giving a sense of how the national programme is progressing.
What the awards and the quote tell us
Virgin Media O2 was named Europe’s most improved mobile network by Umlaut Connect in 2025 and won Best Mobile Network Coverage at the Uswitch Telecoms Awards for the second year running. Professor Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2, said: “Reliable connectivity is increasingly essential to how people live, work and do business, which is why we’re continuing to invest in strengthening our network in the city. This rollout is part of our £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan and brings 5G+ to more customers across Bristol. With faster speeds, lower latency and improved reliability, the upgrade will deliver high-quality coverage that helps our customers stay connected when it matters most.”
Who it suits right now
Anyone on O2 with a recent flagship or mid-range 5G phone stands to gain straight away. Those still on older 4G-only devices or without a compatible SIM will see no change until they upgrade. Check your handset and SIM status on the O2 site before expecting the new performance.
