Rollout Reaches Cable Customers
Virgin Media O2 has switched on 2Gbps download speeds across its hybrid fibre-coaxial network in 18 locations. The move brings multi-gigabit service to roughly three million extra homes without any street works. Towns now live include Newcastle, Manchester, Oxford, Preston and Portsmouth, with further rollout planned across most of the network during 2027.
Speeds on Offer
On the cable side customers get average downloads of 2,000Mbps and uploads of 100Mbps. The service suits heavy streaming, cloud work and multiple 4K devices at once, though upload speeds stay asymmetrical unlike full-fibre rivals. More than ten million premises can already order Gig2 when fibre areas are added in.
Pricing and Terms
The package starts at £49.99 a month on a 24-month contract with no setup fee. The price rises to £53.99 from April 2027 and £57.99 from April 2028. Volt speed boosts do not apply and the offer is limited to selected postcodes only.
What the Provider Says
Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “This is an important milestone for our fixed network. Ultimately, people don’t care what kind of pipe is connecting them as long the service is fast, reliable and delivers what is expected. By making 2Gbps speeds available over cable for the first time, we’re extending multi-gigabit capability to more parts of the UK and showing the continued potential of our existing network infrastructure that still very much meets the increasing needs of consumers. As demand for data continues to grow, we’re investing across our network to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity.”
