We've seen plenty of stories about energy-saving tips, but one Cotswolds family has taken things much further. By combining solar panels, battery storage, a heat pump and a smart electricity tariff, they’ve cut their monthly bills to around £9.
The whole-home strategy that worked
Industrial designer Aanand Davé and his wife Leanne turned their five-bedroom home into a “light-touch” smart home. Rather than relying on a single upgrade, they integrated several technologies so they generate, store and use their own power more efficiently.
Davé noted that "it's actually everything working together that has the biggest positive impact".
Why the combination matters
- Solar panels generate electricity during the day.
- Home battery storage keeps the power for evenings or when prices are higher.
- Heat pumps deliver efficient heating and cooling.
- Smart tariffs let them shift usage to cheaper periods.
This joined-up approach maximises self-consumption and reduces reliance on the grid. Ofgem offers guidance on consumer protection and energy saving at ofgem.gov.uk.
Grants that can help
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants of up to £7,500 (or £9,000 for eligible off-gas properties) towards heat pump installations in England and Wales.
