We're seeing real progress on one of the UK's biggest renewable projects. East Anglia THREE, a joint venture between Masdar and ScottishPower Renewables, has now completed installation of all 95 massive foundations off the Suffolk coast.
What this means for UK homes
Once fully up and running by the end of 2026, the 1.4GW wind farm should generate enough clean electricity for more than 1.3 million average UK homes each year. That's a serious boost to our home-grown power supply and a step towards cutting carbon emissions.
The scale of the job
These monopiles are some of the largest ever installed in Europe, each weighing up to 1,800 tonnes. Turbine installation is already past the halfway mark, with 115-metre blades now being fitted.
Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, put it like this:
"East Anglia THREE is our biggest windfarm ever and the completion of the foundation installation is a true engineering triumph. You only have to look at the numbers - more than 200,000 tonnes of steel anchored spot on into a seabed area the size of almost 43,000 football pitches - to get a sense of what we've achieved so far. It's mind-blowing."
Jobs and investment
The project is also supporting 2,300 construction jobs and nearly £2 billion in UK supply chain spending, with long-term roles expected once it's operational.
