Future promises versus today's kits
Talk of batteries lasting 'thousands of years' comes from early-stage atomic research using carbon-14. Those ideas remain lab-bound and unsuitable for homes. What UK households can actually buy now are Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) systems rated for 8,000–10,000 cycles. That equals roughly 11–27 years of daily charging and discharging before capacity drops below 80 %.
New safety rules from 2026
From 15 October 2026 installers must follow BS 7671 Amendment 4 and PAS 63100:2024. The updated wiring regs ban batteries from lofts, bedrooms and escape routes to cut fire risk. Only MCS-certified installers will qualify customers for the Smart Export Guarantee payments when they export surplus solar power.
Who benefits and what to check
A durable home battery lets you store cheap off-peak electricity and use it at peak times, trimming bills for the average 2,500 kWh household. It also provides backup during outages.
