Minister's Direct Appeal
Scottish households face mounting pressure from energy bills, and Scotland's Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Energy, Stephen Gethins, is calling for more substantial UK Government action. He criticised Prime Minister Andy Burnham's VAT cut on bills, saying it "cannot be the extent of his ambition". Gethins highlighted the frustration in an energy-rich nation: "Energy costs are forcing too many families to make difficult decisions about household budgets. In an energy-rich country like Scotland, that is simply unacceptable."
Price Cap Set to Climb
Ofgem is due to announce the next energy price cap, with forecasts pointing to a further rise in October 2026. Typical households could see the cap move to between £1,725 and £1,760 after the 13% jump already recorded from July 2026. The increase stems from higher wholesale gas prices and global market swings. Scotland's bills are shaped by the wider Great British system, so transmission costs from remote generation sites add to the burden even though the country exports energy.
How Bills Break Down
Your bill includes the unit rate and daily standing charge, both capped by Ofgem, plus wholesale costs, network charges, supplier operating expenses and green levies such as the Renewables Obligation and Energy Company Obligation. Average UK use sits around 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year, though larger or poorly insulated homes, electric heating and cold weather push numbers higher.
