London is staring down a massive financial hit from climate change, with a fresh report putting the annual cost at up to £36 billion by the 2050s if we don't adapt fast.
What the Heat Ready London report says
The "Heat Ready London Technical Report", backed by the Mayor of London and London Councils, shows how extreme temperatures are already hammering productivity, health services and transport. Lost output from heat alone is costing the capital £577 million every year.
Sadiq Khan put it bluntly: "The climate crisis is on our doorstep. It is already threatening Londoners’ lives, disrupting vital services and costing our economy hundreds of millions of pounds."
Why this hits your energy bills
Higher temperatures mean more demand for cooling, extra strain on the grid and bigger swings in wholesale prices. The report also flags that around a million London homes are already at risk of overheating.
We reckon the best way households can fight back is by ditching fossil fuels and moving to clean, affordable power. Comparing energy deals on our site is a simple first step.
Professor Emma Howard Boyd CBE, Chair of the National Heat Risk Commission, summed it up: "This report puts a number on inaction: climate-related damage could cost London up to £36 billion a year by the 2050s, driven by temperatures that are anything but normal."
Acting now on your energy supplier won't solve everything, but it does cut your own costs and helps build the resilient system London needs.
