AI Data Centres Set to Match 100,000 Homes in Power Use

Ireland's regulator flags a tenfold jump in electricity demand from new AI facilities, raising questions for grids and bills on both sides of the Irish Sea.

The Scale of the Demand

Ireland's Commission for Regulation of Utilities warns that a single AI-focused data centre could consume as much electricity each year as around 100,000 homes. Commissioner Jim Gannon notes these sites can use up to ten times more power than conventional centres because of the heavy processing and cooling loads. Last year data centres already took 25% of Ireland's electricity; under median forecasts that share could reach 35% by 2035.

Grid Upgrades and Policy Pushback

EirGrid and ESB Networks plan โ‚ฌ18.9 billion of investment between 2026 and 2030 to strengthen capacity. At the same time, new data centres must source at least 80% of their power from renewables. "As AI models continue to grow in complexity and scale, the electricity requirements of supporting infrastructure are expected to increase correspondingly." โ€” Jim Gannon, Commissioner for the Regulation of Utilities. Environmental groups have called for a moratorium while new rules are written.

Why UK Households Should Care

Higher demand on interconnected grids can feed through to wholesale prices and, eventually, the price cap we all pay. Our energy comparison tools let you check current tariffs and see whether a fixed deal or a tariff with built-in usage alerts would suit your household better.
