Renewables output climbs
SSE reported a nearly 20% rise in renewable generation for the first half of the year compared with the same period last year. The company put the increase down to new projects coming online and favourable weather that boosted output from existing wind and hydro assets.
£33bn five-year investment
The utility is also advancing its £33 billion investment programme, launched last year. Most of the money is earmarked for new renewable projects and upgrades to the transmission network. Regulated networks spending alone rose about 70% year on year, focused on transmission work needed to carry more wind and solar power.
What the changes mean for bills
Larger renewable supplies and a stronger grid should help keep future costs down, but the immediate price cap is still set by wholesale gas prices. Households on default tariffs will see the October cap at £1,723 for the quarter. Anyone wanting to lock in clearer pricing or track usage in real time can compare energy tariffs and switch in minutes.
How to act now
Check your current deal against fixed and flexible options before the next cap review. Smart-meter users can already see half-hourly data and shift usage to cheaper periods where available. Those moves add up while the big infrastructure work continues in the background.
