Debate over new UK oil and gas fields
Simone Rossi, CEO of EDF Energy, has called new UK oil and gas projects a "no-brainer" that do not conflict with net-zero targets. The UK still relies on fossil fuels for nearly three-quarters of its primary energy, leaving households exposed to global price swings. Domestic fields such as Rosebank and Jackdaw are under fresh government review after earlier approvals were quashed.
Fuse Energy's clean electricity focus
Fuse Energy is using the row to restate its own plan: rebuild the system around abundant, clean, domestically produced electricity. The supplier argues this moves the country beyond scarcity thinking and delivers the cheapest energy long term. It points to the Climate Change Act's 2050 net-zero target and the government's aim for 95% low-carbon generation by 2030.
Why electricity matters for bills
Rossi himself notes the only lasting way to cut emissions is to reduce fossil fuel use at the point of consumption. "In the UK the only way we can reduce emissions is to genuinely reduce the usage of fossil fuels at the point of use. Over time, the only solution is electricity." UK electricity demand is expected to more than double by 2050 as heating and transport switch over. We have already looked at how much extra grid capacity that will require.
