Overnight charging beats the pumps
More than 500,000 drivers are now using Intelligent Octopus Go to charge at home when power is cheapest. The tariff automatically fills compatible cars overnight, cutting the average motorist's annual fuel bill by more than £850 compared with a similar petrol car. At current rates that works out to roughly 2p per mile for someone driving 7,600 miles a year.
Petrol has returned to £1.60 a litre after fresh Middle East tensions, and forecourt theft has jumped to almost £200,000 worth of fuel stolen every day. EV drivers on smart tariffs avoid those swings entirely.
Market share keeps growing
Cornwall Insight's latest survey shows Octopus powers 59% of all households on EV tariffs, well ahead of any rival. The total number of British homes on such tariffs has risen almost 60% in the past year to nearly one million.
Alex Schoch, Director of Electrification at Octopus Energy, comments: "Every time petrol prices shoot up, drivers are left paying the price. It’s a reminder of how little control motorists have over what it costs to fill up a petrol car.
Electric cars offer a way out. Instead of being at the mercy of global oil markets, drivers can tap into cheaper, homegrown electricity and fill up for around 2p per mile, saving the average driver around £850 a year.
