Grid Operator Seeks Extra Headroom
The National Energy System Operator issued an electricity margin notice after forecasting a 1,880 MW shortfall between 3pm and 11pm. The move is a routine request for more generation capacity rather than any sign of trouble. NESO described it as a “precautionary measure” to give the system a bigger safety cushion.
Supplies Remain Secure
A NESO spokesman confirmed: “There is no risk to customer electricity supplies, this is not a warning of power cuts, customers do not need to take action and Great Britain’s electricity system remains secure.” Similar notices are standard tools for balancing supply and demand in real time.
Why Home Backup Matters Now
Notices like this underline how tightly the grid must balance demand and supply. Home battery storage, solar-plus-battery setups and the new plug-in solar kits legalised under SI 2026/848 since 27 August 2026 can give households extra resilience. The average UK home uses around 2,500 kWh a year, yet critical loads such as fridges, lighting and medical devices are often far lower, making smaller systems practical for many.
