Sizewell B gets a 20-year extension
We've seen some positive news for Britain's energy security. EDF and the UK Government have signed Heads of Terms for a Contract for Difference that will keep Sizewell B running until 2055 instead of closing in 2035.
The station has already produced more than 270 TWh of low-carbon power since 1995. Extending its life will deliver another 180 TWh while EDF invests around £800 million in refurbishment over the next 15 years.
EDF UK CEO Simone Rossi said: “Global events demonstrate time and again how vital it is for the UK to secure long term, low-carbon, homegrown electricity which protects British households and businesses from market volatility. Extending the life of the plants we already have alongside building new ones is central to EDF’s strategy.”
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband added: “Nuclear power is vital for our energy security, and this extension will help produce the clean power our country needs.”
Minister Lord Vallance noted the deal “protects billpayers and boosts the country’s energy security by continuing to provide clean, secure power for millions of households.”
Why this matters for your bills
Nuclear provides reliable baseload power 24/7, helping reduce reliance on volatile gas markets. You can compare energy deals to see how this extra clean generation could help keep costs down over the long term.
The strike price is set at £70.50/MWh (2025 prices), with final details expected later this year.
