First Look at the New Series
We’ve got our first proper glimpse of Always on Call, Netflix’s debut Nordic medical drama. The seven-episode Norwegian series drops on 26 November and was filmed inside Oslo’s actual former emergency room, giving it a level of authenticity that sets it apart from most hospital shows.
What the Story Focuses On
Rather than a straight clinical procedural, the show puts relationships between doctors and nurses at the centre. It follows surgeon Sofia as she lands in a busy ER, dealing with high-pressure cases, hospital politics and the messy personal lives of her colleagues. The medicine stays in the background while the people and their connections drive the narrative.
The Producer’s Take
Producer Esben Bundgaard-Jørgensen Selvig said: “Medical dramas are having a real resurgence now - that mix of high-stakes, life-and-death situations and intense personal relationships is striking such a chord with viewers right now. What excites me about Always on Call is that it's not just about the drama of the operating room - it's about the people who show up for you no matter who you are, king or ordinary person off the street. That's what a frontline really is. It's Netflix Nordics' first ever medical drama, and we can't wait for audiences to see this emergency room - and everyone in it.”
Why It Stands Out
The series is framed as a tribute to frontline healthcare staff who treat everyone equally, whether it’s a minor injury or a life-threatening emergency.
