A fresh voice lands on the platform
We are getting another candid comedy hour from India this month. Sumukhi Suresh's debut Netflix special Hoemonal arrives on 14 October after a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe and tours across India and beyond. The hour turns the everyday mess of being a woman in her 30s into sharp, relatable material.
What the show actually covers
Suresh pulls from real experiences around dating, body image, singlehood and the big question of motherhood. She leans into the hormonal swings, societal pressure and awkward moments most women recognise but rarely hear discussed on stage. The result is personal without feeling preachy, and funny enough that viewers may find themselves nodding and laughing at the same time.
Her own take on the material
Speaking about the special, Sumukhi Suresh says, “When I wrote Hoemonal in 2021, all I wanted was to be my honest self on stage and accept whatever response I got from the audience. Never expected the response to be laughter along with anger, tears, and truckloads of hugs. I felt like I performed a RomCom on stage. As I toured with the show, I understood that being Hoemonal is not my isolated story but everyone’s experience. Being conservatively raised and now, to date, like a character from a sitcom, or to flirt and use a pick-up line on a man when we have grown up being told not to seek attention; all while dealing with hormones having a rave party inside our bodies, Hoemonal is my chaotic experience of a female life.”
“And now to know that this extremely personal piece is going to be on Netflix? I am crying, and it’s not PMS (or maybe it is. Let me check). Can’t wait for this to be everyone’s comfort watch while they curl up with an ice cream, or make it a date night with their girlfriend, or just watch on their own and hard relate.” she added.
