A story rooted in real tragedy
Netflix has released the official trailer for The Child, a new Spanish drama directed by Mariano Barroso. The film draws from Fernando Aramburu’s novel and centres on the aftermath of a 1980 gas explosion in the Basque Country that killed several children. It follows mother Mariaje and grandfather Nicasio as they navigate grief and search for a way forward.
Barroso, who also wrote the screenplay, describes the project as an exploration of inner strength when people face extreme loss. The cast includes Goya winners Belén Cuesta and Karra Elejalde in the lead roles, supported by Pep Ambròs, Raquel Ferri, Joan Solé and young actor Alex Infantes.
Release dates and viewing options
The film opens in cinemas across Spain on 13 November before arriving on Netflix on 27 November. UK viewers with a standard Netflix subscription will be able to stream it at no extra cost once it lands on the platform.
The story mixes fact and fiction to examine different responses to the same tragedy, something that may appeal to fans of character-driven dramas already on the service.
How it fits into Netflix’s line-up
We’ve seen Netflix continue to add European titles that tackle difficult real events, and The Child follows that pattern. You can browse the full range of current and upcoming shows and films in our tv section to see what else is scheduled for the coming weeks.
The trailer highlights the emotional core of the story without relying on action set pieces, so expectations should be set for a quieter, more reflective watch rather than a fast-paced thriller. No extra charges or special plans are required beyond a regular Netflix account.
