Why the grid needs fixing
Britain's electricity network was built for old coal and gas plants, not today's wind and solar farms. The result is frequent curtailment, where clean power gets switched off because it cannot reach homes. Professor Keith Bell of the University of Strathclyde warns: "If we don’t have enough transmission network capacity, we won’t be able to make full use of renewable energy resources."
Scale of the £150bn project
The National Energy System Operator says more than £150 billion must be spent on transmission by 2041. That means over 4,000 miles of new power lines, pylons and subsea cables — five times the build rate of the last thirty years. Key schemes include the Eastern Green Links and Sea Link interconnectors that will carry Scottish wind power south.
Short-term bill rises, longer-term savings
The cost will land on household bills through network charges. Energy secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh said: "For a decade and a half, under the last government, we didn’t invest in our energy system, we didn’t invest in the grid, and we’re going to have to deal with that." Planning fights ahead
Local opposition to pylons and visual impact is already slowing some routes. Underground cables cost four to five times more, pushing bills higher still. The National Audit Office has flagged dozens of projects at risk of delay, so the final price tag and timeline remain uncertain.
