New Bill Discount for Homes Near Energy Projects

We've been digging into the latest government plans and there's a fresh way some households could shave hundreds off their energy bills. If your home sits within 500 metres of new or significantly upgraded onshore electricity infrastructure, you might qualify for up to £250 a year for as long as ten years.

Payments are set to begin in the first half of 2027, with most people getting the discount automatically through their supplier in two instalments.

Who's Eligible?

• Homes in England, Scotland or Wales
• Properties within the 500-metre zone of qualifying projects
• Construction must start on or after 10 March 2025 and before 1 January 2040

Care homes, student accommodation and vacant properties are excluded, and you can only claim once even if you're near multiple projects.

How It Works

Ofgem will run the scheme and is due to consult this summer. Most households will see the money taken straight off their electricity bill, while a smaller group can opt in for bank transfers or vouchers.
