Families Could Pocket £3,550 a Year by Pooling Everyday Costs

New research shows big savings from sharing bills and plans, but most households are still missing out on mobile deals

29 July 2026 · Hannah Blackwood · Vodafone

We've been digging into fresh research from Vodafone and it turns out British families are leaving serious money on the table. By coordinating spending on everything from groceries to gadgets, a typical household of four could save up to £3,550 a year.

The "Solo SIM Penalty" hitting most homes

Almost half of families (46%) still spread their mobile contracts across different networks. That means they're paying extra for no good reason. The study found 75% of households haven't even looked at bundling their phones together yet.

Four simple swaps that add up

Professor John Gathergood from the University of Nottingham worked with Vodafone on the numbers. Here are the areas where families can make the biggest difference:

  • Spending together on holidays, groceries, eating out and days out: £1,200 a year
  • Bundling subscriptions like mobile, broadband and streaming: £1,100 a year
  • Pooling finances and rewards: £500 a year
  • Combining insurance policies: £450 a year

What the experts say

John Gathergood, Professor, University of Nottingham, said: “What’s striking is the size of the prize. £3,550 a year is a serious sum – and the savings come from a simple shift: substituting individual purchases for joint ones. Consolidating subscriptions alone can save families £1,100, and a multi-line mobile plan, such as Vodafone Together, provides the largest single saving in this category.”

A VodafoneThree spokesperson added: “Families today are doing everything they can to make their money work harder – from bulk‑buying essentials to pooling loyalty points. But taking mobile plans together remains a missed opportunity for many.”
