Fresh Spanish project underway
Netflix has confirmed that cameras have started rolling on La Regenta, its adaptation of the 19th-century Spanish novel by Leopoldo Alas, “Clarín”. The story follows Ana Ozores, trapped in a stifling provincial marriage, as she becomes the focus of conflicting desires and social scrutiny. Production is the first collaboration between Netflix and Spanish company Elastica Films.
Key creative team and cast
Mar Coll directs and co-wrote the screenplay with Anna R. Costa and Diego Vega. María Zamora produces. Ester Expósito stars as Regenta, joined by Oriol Pla, Vito Sanz, Borja Luna, Ana Torrent and others. The film is described as a modern, female-led perspective on the source material.
Mar Coll’s approach
In a statement preserved from the announcement, Coll said: “Clarín’s novel is so rich that dozens of different adaptations can be made from it, like those that came before ours or those that will follow it. I have tried to approach the material, humbly, from a radically personal perspective, as I always do. I have made my own what has moved me most in the novel, and what explores the loneliness and heartbreak of this regent’s wife, who tirelessly longs for to give meaning to her life. a more real life. A luminous character inhabiting a universe poised to prey on her. A woman whose sensitivity and stubborn search constitute, in themselves, a form of resistance.”
