The Programme
Netflix ANZ has opened applications for The Next Brilliant Career, a development scheme for Australian writers who identify as women or non-binary. Eight shortlisted writers will pitch original scripted concepts at Netflix's Sydney office on 6 October 2026 and receive direct feedback on their work. The initiative ties into the upcoming series My Brilliant Career and aims to surface authentically Australian stories.
Who Qualifies and When
Applicants must be Australian residents aged 18 or over, hold between one and three reportable writing credits on qualifying productions, and not be full-time students. Submissions opened on 4 August 2026 and close at 23:59 on 18 August 2026. Each entry needs a logline, one-page synopsis, five-page writing sample, audience description and explanation of cultural relevance. Writers keep full ownership of their ideas; taking part does not transfer any rights to Netflix.
What Selected Writers Receive
One writer from each state and territory will attend the Sydney pitch day. Netflix covers travel and up to two nights' accommodation. After the session, participants refine their concept and submit a revised version by 6 November 2026, then receive written feedback by 1 December 2026. Selection does not guarantee further development or funding.
