Front-line roots shape every decision
Stella Hughes has spent 26 years at E.ON, starting on the phones at Powergen. Now Head of SME Service at E.ON Next, she still uses that experience when shaping offers for pubs, farms, nurseries and corner shops. No two businesses are alike, she says, so the team works to understand “the business behind the meter” rather than pushing one-size-fits-all deals.
Three Cs and 98 % on-time billing
Hughes balances what she calls the “three Cs”: customers, colleagues and commercials. The approach has helped the supplier hit around 98 % of invoices sent on time, giving small firms clearer cash-flow visibility. She notes most SMEs lack specialist energy teams and cannot easily absorb sudden price spikes, so reliable billing and consumption data matter more than headline rates alone.
Tech that could turn energy into an asset
E.ON Next is exploring export tariffs, solar panels, batteries, heat pumps and EV chargers aimed at SMEs. These could let businesses generate and store power rather than simply buy it. We already covered the supplier’s recent FlatSave scheme that brings shared solar and batteries to social-housing flats for the first time.
