The Deal
Octopus Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with battery makers CATL and Ampace to develop smarter home energy storage. The collaboration will explore sodium-ion chemistries, higher-density cells and longer-lifecycle systems that work directly with Octopus tariffs and its Virtual Power Plant platform. Work will focus first on European markets where Octopus already operates retail energy businesses.
How the Batteries Will Work
The partners want hardware that charges automatically when power is cheapest and cleanest, then exports to the grid at peak times. Octopus says the systems will cut household bills while supporting the wider shift to renewables. Greg Jackson, Founder and CEO of Octopus Energy Group, said: "Combining CATL and Ampace's world-leading battery chemistry with Octopus's smart tech and customer platform will transform home energy storage. Together, we're building next-generation batteries where hardware and software work in complete harmony to slash energy bills and speed up the green energy transition."
Ties to Earlier Moves
The agreement builds on an existing relationship that already delivered Swaptopus battery-swapping stations across Europe. It also sits alongside Octopus's current low-carbon range, which includes the Cosy heat pump, Charge EV charger and Nook home battery products. This latest step arrives as Octopus has seen heat-pump enquiries rise sharply.
