Winter extension locked in
Octopus Energy is stretching its Happy Hours free electricity scheme through to 14 February 2027. The decision follows strong customer demand, with nearly 800,000 households already taking part and more than 8 million free hours issued so far, worth over £1.7 million. Existing participants must use up to two banked hours before 1 November, after which any balance converts automatically into tokens for the winter period.
How tokens and slots work
Households earn one token for each successful weekday Saving Session. Two tokens normally unlock one free hour at the weekend, though the exact ratio can shift with wholesale prices. New features include occasional Saturday slots and more flexible timing. Some weekends may skip a dedicated Happy Hour if market conditions make it unviable, but tokens will always roll over in those cases.
Who qualifies and what to do
You need an Octopus account on Direct Debit or prepay, a working smart meter, Octoplus membership and registration for Saving Sessions. Once signed up, you simply reduce usage during the two weekday peak hours to bank tokens, then pick your weekend slot. Full terms are on the supplier’s site, and the scheme forms part of the wider Octoplus rewards programme that has already paid out £19 million in benefits.
What customers think
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Customer Officer at Octopus Energy, commented: "Our customers spoke, and we listened. The response to our Happy Hours has been phenomenal, so extending them through the cold winter months was a no-brainer. “Whether you're roasting a Sunday lunch, carving Halloween pumpkins, or powering up Christmas lights, we’re keeping the green energy flowing and helping households keep their bills down." Participants rate the scheme 8/10 on average, with 47% awarding a perfect 10/10 and 87% saying they plan to join again.
