A Dynasty Overthrown
Netflix is bringing a reimagined version of the Thai story Empress of Flames to screens worldwide on 3 December. The series follows Ananthip, the sole surviving descendant of King Phuka, after her family is overthrown in a bloody rebellion. Stripped of her title and driven into exile, she transforms into a strategist plotting her return amid palace betrayals and rival heirs.
The show expands the original tale by exploring the earlier reign of the ruthless Queen Tawanthip and the personal motivations driving every major player, from the headstrong Sekharathewi to the ambitious Tongnual.
Director and Cast Vision
Director Sivaroj Kongsakul, returning after Master of the House, said: “I had never watched any of the previous versions of Empress of Flames before. So, for this project, I started with the original story and explored what it had to offer me. The story is driven by the characters’ emotions, revealing both the course of their lives and their family relationships, all unfolding against the struggle for the throne. I was swept up in every character’s tears, laughter and screams. At times, it even felt as though the story itself was teaching me about emotions and about myself. I wanted to preserve the heart and essence of the story while adding more detail and depth, particularly to the characters and their life journeys. Audiences will get to see each character’s journey, along with the circumstances and motivations behind their actions. This brings a fresh dimension, blending everything together in a more nuanced and sophisticated way.”
Lead actor Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul prepared extensively to show Ananthip’s loneliness and pain beneath her resilience, while Narilya Gulmongkolpech and Khemanit Jamikorn highlight the layered backstories of their characters.
Fantasy World and Costumes
Production designers built an original map of the Thipaya Kingdom and surrounding realms, creating distinct costumes and architecture that blend Southeast Asian influences with fantasy elements rather than copying any single culture. The throne room set was constructed from scratch to reflect power dynamics from both above and below.
How to Watch
The eight-episode series lands exclusively on Netflix. UK viewers already subscribed can add it to their watchlist now; those comparing streaming options can check our TV hub for the latest on what each platform is adding this winter.
