Survey highlights new markers of control
A British Gas poll of 2,000 UK adults shows traditional signs of having life together, such as regular savings or knowing bin day, now sit alongside eco upgrades. Nearly four in ten (39%) view solar panels, heat pumps or rainwater systems as proof someone has things sorted, while 32% specifically name solar panels paired with a smart meter.
Energy independence tops the list
More than half (54%) believe generating their own electricity would help them feel more in control of bills, with 45% saying it would cut reliance on the grid. Another 35% think solar panels alone would deliver that sense of command, and 31% link it to greater financial independence. The research also found 46% want an energy-efficient home that costs less to run, while 27% now treat knowing monthly energy use as a marker of being on top of things.
