Fresh docs hitting screens
Netflix is rolling out four new comedy documentaries this month, starting with Who Is Martin Mull? already available. The others land on 16, 23 and 30 October. We see this as a solid push into longer-form comedy storytelling after the spring NIAJ Fest.
What each film covers
Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald uses the late comedian’s own sketches, stand-up and book excerpts as narration. Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story follows the Lady Dynamite star through mental-health struggles and recent personal losses. SCTV: The Greatest Show You’ve Never Heard Of reunites surviving cast members to look back at the cult Canadian sketch series, with old seasons already streaming. Director Judd Apatow said of the Bamford film: “We watched her go through the Altadena fires, the death of both of her parents, and she just handled everything with such strength and grace.”
Who this slate suits
These films should appeal to fans of thoughtful comedy rather than quick laughs. The Bamford story in particular mixes stand-up with honest mental-health discussion, while the SCTV doc offers behind-the-scenes history for sketch fans. Viewers outside the UK can check availability on their local Netflix app. For more on what’s new on the streamer, head over to our tv section. The line-up keeps comedy front and centre without any mid-contract price changes for existing subscribers.
