Netflix's 'My Sad Dead' Gets San Sebastián World Premiere

Pablo Larraín's four-part supernatural drama lands on the platform on 24 September after its festival bow

25 August 2026 · Daniel Hartley · Netflix

Festival Debut

Pablo Larraín's new miniseries My Sad Dead will open in competition at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. The four-episode story, adapted from Mariana Enriquez's short fiction, stars Mercedes Morán as a retired doctor who sees the dead. It will screen in feature-length form before arriving on Netflix.

What the Story Involves

Ema tries to deal with her mother's death while her niece Julie arrives and three teenagers are murdered in a violent suburb. The killings set off a wave of ghostly appearances that spreads through the neighbourhood. The cast also includes Dolores Fonzi, Alejandra Flechner and Carolina Álvarez. Larraín said: "Pleased that My Sad Dead is part of the competition in San Sebastián, an old and close festival, where our language and culture are protagonists."

UK Viewing Details

The series reaches Netflix on 24 September. Viewers here can add it to their list now through the usual Netflix app or website. The project comes from Fabula, the Chilean company behind several Larraín features that have earned Oscar nominations and wins.

Why It Matters

Larraín's return to the festival with a Spanish-language project highlights growing European interest in Latin American stories on global platforms. The four episodes mix family drama with supernatural elements, and the timing after the festival gives UK subscribers a clear date to watch without waiting for further announcements.
